Over The Rainbow at Eggs & Berries Cafe

Most people go to Changi Point Mall for the warehouse sales such as Hush Puppies and Puma.  It is definitely out of the way if you want to go there for food unless you are living near Pasir Ris or Changi.

I went to Eggs and Berries Café as I like the name of the café.  As I expected, the café does serve dishes with eggs.

For main course, I ordered the Fish and chips with scramble eggs.  The fish was tender and I like the batter.  It was crispy and not oily.  Chips were sparkled with herbs and salt.  I find it a bit salty for my liking.  To make it a balanced meal, there was also salad.  The salad was fresh and I like the dressing, which is mayonnaise with slight taste of garlic.  I didn't know mayonnaise goes well with garlic.  Maybe I can try making this dressing at home too.  As for the scramble eggs, I hope they can be more generous with the portion.

I had Over the rainbow waffle as my desert.  The banner at the door stated that their waffle was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.  It was not a lie.    As the name of the waffle suggested, the waffle was top with colourful fruits like strawberries, blueberries, mango slices, peaches, walnut and almond.  It was fun eating fruits with waffle.

I ordered a glass of smoothie that had the name 'Banana Sunset' (banana, orange and vanilla).  The smoothie was refreshing but I felt the taste of banana had overpowered orange, therefore I could not really taste orange in this beverage.

White and Black carrot cake @ Toa Payoh

There are two stalls in Toa Payoh Lorong 1 market selling carrot cake.  Chey Sua Carrot Cake  specialised in 'White' carrot cake, that is, carrot cake with eggs.  It is normal to wait for 30 mins or longer for a plate of carrot cake on Sunday.  However, it is always worth the wait.

The carrot cake is soft and is wrapped with lots of eggs.  I always start with the edges of the carrot cake first as the edge is the crispest.  Chilli is spread on top of the eggs to ensure that customers would taste the slightly sweet chilli with every bite.

26 Carrot Cake serves the both the black and white version of carrot cake.  I usually go for the black version.  Like Chey Sua Carrot Cake stall, I usually have to wait for about 30 minutes for my carrot cake.  The 'black' version is moist and soft.  Chilli is spicy too.

My Ratings  :  4 /5 (for both stalls)

Niche Boulangerie @ Toa Payoh

Walking to Toa Payoh Lorong 1 market on Sunday, I notice a tiny but cosy café next to Creamier Café.  The cakes on display are pretty enough to attract me to the café.  I ask the staff, who I think is the boss, for a menu.  He refers me to the menu board for all the beverages the café serves.  He then patiently introduces the pastries and sandwiches.

I study the menu board on the wall and order a Amaretto Latte. The boss kindly explains that it is latte with almond flavour.  Before I could sip the latte, the aroma of almond fills the air. The coffee is rich and foamy.

The cakes look delicious and I finally settle for Berries Bavarian ($5.90).  The jam on the cake is thick.  There is a good balance of sweet and sour.

I am a sandwich lover, so I try the Sausage Croque Monsieur.  I find out later that croque monsieur is a type of sandwich which originated from France.  No wonder the bread is similar to French Toast.  The sandwich is filled with mushrooms and sausages.  The portion is just right for ladies.

Smoked Salmon Quiche is equally delicious.  The light and crisp crust contains the fluffy eggs and smoke salmon.

Although Niche Boulangerie is new to the café scene at Toa Payoh, it has already gained a few loyal customers. As I am paying up, a lady customer actually introduces the Brownies and Banana Nutella Muffin.  Thumbs up for their sincere service.  I hope they can expand the café so that more people can enjoy their food.

One and only Chilli Mee Stall @ Golden Mile Food Centre

Chung Cheng Chilli Mee, Prawn Mee and Laksa is one of the stalls I must patronise whenever I go to Golden Mile market and food centre.  This stall has received good reviews from many newspapers.

I am not kidding when I say the prawn noodles soup is one of the best in Singapore.  The soup is so flavourful and sweet.  One sip, you know that the stall owner takes pride in his soup.  Chilli is savoury and I am pretty sure is homemade.  Chilli mee is served with pork rib.  The pork rib is well cooked and the meat is so tender and will not stuck in between your teeth.

I have yet to try the laksa.  I will definitely go or the laksa the next time.  I am sure it will be equally tasty as the chilli mee and prawn noodles.

Hidden Gem .....The Coastal Settlement

Located at a quiet corner of Singapore, The Coastal Settlement is a hidden gem.  I felt as if I had travelled back to the 1970s when I stepped into the café.

Vintage cars and furniture remind me of old Singapore.  It is also a great place to bring your children along as there is a 'playground' at the backyard.

For starters, we ordered the Coastal Wings.  The wings were well marinated.  The chilli was not spicy but sour.

We had thin crust garlic prawns pizza.  The pizza was great.  The prawns were fresh.  As the name suggested, there was lots of garlic.  This dish is meant for those who like garlic.

Rosti Sausage consist of a large sausage, rosti, sunny side up eggs and salad.  We enjoyed the rosti, which was quite thick and crispy.

We ordered Garlic Prawn Agilo Oilo.  I expected to have the usual type of agilo oilo, that is cooked with just garlic and chilli oil.  This agilo oilo was cooked with a twist.   It was, in my opinion, the Singapore version.   The chilli was cooked with dried shrimps.  It was a bit moist and savoury.  I can't stop eating this dish....yummy.

The Blackforest Cake in a Jar was a winner.  We totally loved the vanilla ice cream.  It was smooth and creamy.  One of the best ice cream I ever had.

Fried Bee Hoon

Fried bee hoon is a great dish for gathering and party as it goes with any finger food or curry.

1)  1 packet of bee hoon
2)  4 cloves of garlic
3)  3 cloves of shallots
4)  1 bunch of cai xin
5)   1 can of luncheon meat (dice)
6)  1 carrot (cut into thin strips)
7)  2 eggs
8)  Lettuce ( cut into strips)
9)  1 fish cake (Optional)
10)  1 small bowl chicken stock
11) salt, pepper and sesame oil

1)  Soak bee hoon in water until soft.  Remove it from water.  Put bee hoon in a big bowl and cover it with a lid.  This way, texture of bee hoon will be more Q.  In Chinese, it means 燜 bee hoon.
3)  Slice fish cake into thin slices.
4)  Beat eggs and fried them.  When cooked, remove from wok and leave it to cool.  Cut them into strips.
5)  Fry luncheon meat until brown.  Remove it from wok and put it away.
6)  Fry garlic and shallots until fragrant.  Add carrots, cai xin.  Stir fry them for a while.

7)  When carrot and cai xin are cooked, add bee hoon and stir fry.
8)  Add luncheon meat, sliced fish cake and continue to stir fry.
9)  Add chicken stock to the bee hoon and stir fry. Cover the wok for a few minutes so that bee hoon can absorb chicken stock.
10)  Add salt, pepper and sesame oil and stir fry the bee hoon.
11)  When bee hoon is cooked, garnish with eggs and lettuce.

1.  You can use chicken cube if you do not have chicken stock.
Dissolve 1/2 chicken cube to a small pot of boiling water.
2.  Sometimes I will use ham instead of luncheon meat.

Fika Swedish Cafe and Bistro

When anyone mention about Swedish food, I will immediately associate it with IKEA.  Swedish Cafe and Bistro, located at Beach Road  is another place where we can get good of Swedish food.

The cafe has a homely and cosy feel. The staff are friendly and eager to serve.  Meatball is the first in my must try dish when I was there.  I like the meatballs serve in IKEA and want to try authentic Swedish meatballs serve elsewhere.  The meatballs were big and juicy. It was accompanied with boiled potatoes. ..the type IKEA used to serve along with their meatballs.  To make it a balanced meal, there was also salad.  I totally enjoyed my meatballs.

The baked pasta was cheesy and quite good.  The only negative comment is it was abit oily and heavy. If you are not so hungry,  I would suggest you share it with a friend.

I like the freshly brewed coffee which was bitter but yet aramotic.   I had pecan chocolate cake.  It was loaded with a generous amount of pecan and caramel.  The cake was delicious.

Mini Steamboat @ Kallang Bahru

If you want to enjoy steamboat on your own, visit the stall at Food Cheery Coffee Shop at Kallang Bahru.  You can have a mini steamboat for just $4.50.

There is a choice of either pork set or chicken set.  I had the pork mini steamboat.  There were pork belly, lean meat, cabbage, lettuce, a half a cob of corn and 2 fishballs.  According to the banner, no msg is added to the soup.

Indeed, the soup was light and not oily.  The taste of the soup was enhanced when all the ingredients were added into it.  I like the fishballs.  They were handmade and bouncy.  You can also choose different sauce to go with your mini steamboat too.

Gobi Desserts @ Joo Chiat Road

Gobi Desserts is a cosy cafe located along Joo Chiat Road.  It is a place where both young and old will enjoy.  I was attracted by the décor.  The arch like mural looks like a tunnel inviting me to walk into the kitchen.

Crème Brulee Poire William is a classic custard dessert ($12) .  I totally enjoy this dessert.  The top is covered with caramelised sugar and is crispy, thin and easy to crack.  The custard is smooth and rich.  I enjoy digging into the pear.

There are 4 types of cheese cake to choose from.  Unlike the cheesecake from many other café or confectionary which tends to be heavy, the chocolate cheesecake ($7.50)  is light and delicious.  Dark chocolate is used to ensure the quality.  It is one of the best cheesecake I have had.

As much as I enjoy the desserts, I cannot say that for coffee.  The coffee is not strong and quite bland.  I feel that it is a must to serve good coffee to complement the delicious dessert.
Do visit Gobi Dessert if you want to try the dessert.  You will not regret.  Just choose your coffee carefully.
